Staying organized will help keep the home purchase process less stressful. With packing, you may miss some crucial to-dos. The home buying checklist prior to closing in this article lists things to include on your to-do list.
Enroll Children in School
If you have kids attending school, contact school administrative offices to learn what documentation you will need for enrollment. You normally must obtain school records. You might also need copies of immunization history and proof of residency. Also, Registration might need to be done in person.
Notify Others of Address Change
To stop mail from getting lost, update your address and forward your mail. Mail forwarding is done through the United States Postal Service either online or in-person. Forwarding is meant as a temporary service and therefore lasts for a finite timeframe. Notify everyone of the change including credit card companies, service providers, employers, and friends.
Contact Utility Services
At least seven days prior to closing, contact utility providers to end existing accounts and set up new ones. This includes electricity, fuel (oil/gas), cable and Internet, and phone services. Many utility services just read the meter when transitioning from one occupant to another. However, if you forget to call them to start service in time, then it might actually be shut down and result in a fee for starting back up again. It is therefore critical that you notify them ahead of time to eliminate service interruption and added costs.
Update Vehicle Insurance
Call your insurance company to give them the updated address. Your premium could change as a result. If you are moving out of state, you must also register all vehicles and apply for a new drivers license. Most states provide reciprocity and do not require a test.
